        Spring Break

            Parent Teacher Conferences Continue this week.  Minimum Day Schedule.

                                      Students dismissed at 1:45 Monday – Friday.

This week in:

Language Arts–   Analyze an informative text and continue to practice inferring details from text.

Writing– Finish the writing of a narrative story based on facts from the two astronaut articles and internet research.

Math– Continue our unit on fractions.  Chapter 8 in GoMath.

Social Studies- On hold this week as we continue practicing using the California end of year testing website.  We will be looking at English Language Art assessments this week to include Brief Writes, Editing and Revisions.

 

Question to ask your child: “Please show me 1/3 on a number line.”  (Have your child demonstrate their understanding of how to place fractions on a number line.)

Question to ask your child: “What is RAEEE? Hint, it’s an acronym for writing.” (RAEEE stands for Restate the question, Answer the question, use Examples, Evidence and Explain your answer.  We are focusing on the Explaining part.  Students must be able to Explain why their answer is correct.)

Language Arts–   Look at the features of realistic fiction. Practice inferring details from the text.

Writing– Write a narrative story based on facts from the two astronaut articles and internet research.

Math– Continue our unit on fractions.  Chapter 8 in GoMath.  This week we will focus on comparing fractions on a number line.

Social Studies- On hold this week as we continue practicing logging in and using the California end of year testing website.  We will be looking at English Language Art      assessments this week.

Question to ask your child: “What can you infer if someone comes in from outside with a wet umbrella?” (It’s raining outside.)“How does this information effect you?” (The student should realize that he/she will need to dress appropriately if going outside.)

This week in:

Language Arts– Using context clues to define vocabulary.  Literal versus non-literal language. Look at the features of descriptive texts.

Writing– Finish informative writing task for the “Astronauts Activity”.  Move on to writing a narrative story based on facts from the two astronaut articles.

Math– Continue our unit on fractions.  Chapter 8 in GoMath.  This week we will focus on strategies to solve fraction word problems.

Social Studies- On hold this week as we practice logging in and using the California end of year testing website.  We will be looking at English Language Art        assessments this week.

 

Question to ask your child: “What are some text features of descriptive (informative) texts?” (Text features include; Title, headings, pictures, graphs, illustrations, captions, and diagrams.)

* Students will be practicing logging in and using the California State Testing website this week, Tuesday – Thursday from about 10:00 – 11:45.

This week in:

Language Arts– Authors point of view and interpreting graphic features like illustrations.

Writing– Continue “Astronauts Activity”.  Use two text sources to answer multiple prompts on the subject.  We will be using these texts to write informative and opinion responses as well as for writing a narrative.  This will be a multi-week process.

Math– Continue our unit on fractions.  Chapter 8 in GoMath. Our first focus is on developing an understanding of fractions as numbers and that a fraction represents a whole being partitioned into equal parts.

Social Studies- On hold this week as we practice logging in and using the California end of year testing website.  We will be looking at Math assessments this week.

 

Question to ask your child: “How many fourths are in one whole?” (There are 4 fourths.)

Language Arts– Reading comprehension of Informational Texts and writing a response using details from the text. We are focusing on explaining our answers.

Writing– Continue “Astronauts Activity” Use two text sources to answer multiple prompts on the subject.  We will be using these texts to write informative and opinion responses as well as for writing a narrative.  This will be a multi-week process.

Math– Continue our unit on fractions.  Chapter 8 in GoMath. Our first focus is on developing an understanding of fractions as numbers and that a fraction represents a whole being partitioned into equal parts.

Social Studies- Exploring California and early communities

 

Question to ask your child: “What is a unit fraction?” (It represents the number of equal parts of a whole. For example, 4 equal parts is fourths.)

 

Upcoming Events

2/14 Valentine’s Day-  Students may bring in cards to share. There are 24 students in a class.  If you want to pass out gifts, we encourage non-food items (pencils, erasures etc.) due to students with food allergies in our classrooms.

2/14  Kids Heart Challenge Event. Please have your student wear athletic shoes. The whole school will be jumping rope together at 2:15 – 2:45. 

2/15 – 2/18  President’s Day Weekend- No School

Week of February 5th

Schedule adjustment!

     We needed to swap our Music and Art classes to Tuesday this week.  Please remind your child to bring their recorders to school on Tuesday. Thank you!

 

Valentine grams sales will begin Feb. 5th- Feb. 12th while supplies last. Please see the PTA table before and after school to purchase yours! The cost is $2.00. Grams will be delivered on February 14th.

Social Studies- Continue learning about California’s native tribes.  Students will learn about tribal folklore.

 

Question to ask your child: “What do we call the bottom number in a fraction, and what does it represent?” (It is called the denominator and it represents the number of equal parts in a whole.)
