Week of February 2, 2015

Thank you to everyone who made our Science and technology Night successful! It was great to see so many families celebrate our students’ hard work on their science projects! Congratulations to everyone who created a new breed of dog, too! 🙂

If your student took his or her Science Project home after the Science Night, please return it ASAP, so he or she can present it to the class this week. The projects have not yet been graded, so students will not get a grade if they are not returned!

State Testing time is coming up quickly, and the assessments are computer-based. Students in grades 3-6 will be taking the State Tests on the computer, and, as we recently discovered, this includes the writing assessment. In an effort to help your child become familiar with the testing format, we are making a slight change to KidBiz Thought Questions. Rather than hand-writing it in the journal, we would like students to type the response on the computer, then print it out and attach it to a blank page in the journal. We want to continue to use the journal to monitor and celebrate the writing progress your child makes. If you have issues with your printer at home, let your child’s teacher know and we can discuss the situation. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher.

Homework:

Science Project and reading for 20 minutes each night ONLY! Project is due WEDNESDAY!
Reminders:
Please make sure your student is wearing appropriate outerwear on cool days, especially in the morning. As per Mrs. McLaren: When the weather is cold, no jacket, no outdoor play.

Multiplication is a HUGE part of math from third grade and beyond, and we are working on knowing all multiplication facts 0-10 automatically. Students must know these facts before they leave third grade, or they will struggle in math in later grades. And even if your child has passed every multiplication quiz, they need to practice routinely so they do not forget the facts they worked so hard to learn. Some ideas for how you can help your child at home include flash cards; multiplication.com, xtramath.org, and abcya.com; practicing rapid-fire in the car, during commercials, or at dinner, et cetera.

Please be sure to send your child to school in appropriate footwear. We have PE every day, and it is important that students wear comfortable, close-toed shoes.Don’t forget to return your library books!
